used to express exhilaration, especially when leaping from a great height or moving at a high speed.
As 2016 arrived, many of my fellow geek bloggers shared posts about their word for the year. For those of you who are not aware, your word for the year is one word that will serve as both an inspiration and a guiding light throughout the year. I thought this was an interesting concept and gave it a lot of thought. I wanted a word that described me, who I am as a person, that would serve as an inspiration for a year that was already shaping up to involve a lot of personal and professional changes.
After a month of careful thought, I decided that my word for 2016 would be “Geronimo.” For Whovians, this word immediately invokes memories of Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor. For Historians, this is a key figure in American History. However, for me, it has come to mean so much more- and I don’t see that changing in 2016. I particularly fell in love with the first part of the definition: “used to express exhilaration.” I believe that sums up the coming year in a nice, neat package. Here’s why:
Geronimo: The Professional
In the fall of 2015, I began to take my professional career in a different direction. Rather than continue on my struggling freelance path, I took a marketing job with a large corporation. After two months of formal company training, and one week of training in my department, I was left on my own. Talk about a Geronimo moment! Well, after returning from the holidays, I found out that my supervisor was leaving the company. So, again, I was faced with another Geronimo moment! Beyond the immediate changes within the job itself, it also forced me to take a leap and walk away from different things I was involved in… and left me with a lot less free time. I took a leap, I exhilarated my professional growth, and have a lot of opportunity ahead of me that really is mine for the taking! Geronimo!

The More Personal Geronimo
While part of my personal changes for 2016 revolve around my new job (i.e. moving closer to my office and in order to reduce my 1.5 hour commute each way), others have absolutely nothing to do with it. I have promised myself that 2016 is going to be about ME and what makes me happy. No more thinking that I should be in a relationship/dating etc. because my family thinks I should be. After I wasted two months of my life on someone, introduced them to my family, garnered all the appropriate praise, I was friend zoned. No more. In 2016, I am exhilarating my life towards not thinking about what other people think or any expectations other people may have of me! Geronimo!
Do you have a word for 2016? I might be late to the game but I really would like to know what word everyone else has picked (or would pick)!
